In order to optimize the source condition used in transient elastography, a precise understanding of tissue displacements in terms of amplitude and directivity is needed. To serve this purpose, a numerical model has been developed to simulate shear wave propagation in an axisymmetric heterogeneous soft medium. An independent simulation of the shear wave propagation has been developed leading to a better understanding of the displacements measured in transient elastography. This simulation should also be useful for the validation of inverse problem algorithms.
