Pigs are very sensitive to changes in feeding and other stress factors and therefore are affected frequently by diarrhoea. A stable gut microbiota is considered as a prerequisite for healthy animals and a high level of animal welfare. Furthermore, animal health affects the economic efficiency as well as the safety and quality of food from animal origin. Consumers are willing to pay extra for pork with certain assurances, including a high welfare status of pigs. In this project, the influence of probiotics, whole plant maize silage and grass silage on the composition of the intestinal microbiota in different parts of the intestine (stomach, duodenum, ileum, caecum, colon) and the faecal microbiota of organic growing-finishing pigs was investigated. Thirty-six healthy piglets were assigned to four different dietary treatments. The basal feed mixture (control group) was modified by adding either probiotics, whole plant maize silage or grass silage. The microbial composition of the samples was examinedby cultural methods in an anaerobic workstation. The following microbial parameters were examined: Total aerobic and anaerobic counts, lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, clostridia, E. coli, enterococci and enterobacteria.
