Voltage-Dependent Calcium Channels in Renal Resistance Vessels

The renal resistance vessels control renal blood flow and the distribution of flow within the regions of the kidney. Excitation-contraction coupling in these vessels involves voltage-dependent calcium channels (Ca_v). Molecular studies show expression of both P-, L-, and T-type in myocytes from preglomerular vessels whereas no Ca_v was found in cortical efferent arterioles. In the muscular juxtamedullary efferent arterioles we found expression of T- and L-type Ca_v. Functional studies confirm involvement of Ca in the excitation-contraction mechanism of renal resistance vessels except cortical efferent arterioles. The demonstration of several different types of Ca_v and a differential expression in the renal resistance vasculature could be important for our understanding of pathological changes in renal hemodynamics and regulation of arterial blood pressure.
