Long-term application of phosphate fertiliser results in the elevation of uranium (U)concentrations of agricultural soils as phosphate fertilisers contain appreciableconcentrations of U as an impurity"). Water soluble fraction of U accounts for 10 to 80%of total U in phosphate fertiliser. The water-soluble U in the phosphate fertiliser is easilyadsorbed on soil4), thereby causing an accumulation of U in soil. During a 10-year period ina paddy field of Japan, the increase of U in soil due to the application of phosphate fertiliserwas estimated as 5.3% of total U in the soil4). Fertiliser-derived U is mainly associated withorganic substances and metal oxides in Andosols, which have higher amounts of organicmatte?) and could become a potential source for plant uptake following the release of U dueto the decomposition of organic matter and/or the dissolution of metal oxides. AnatiYans)observed increased U concentrations in meadow grasses due to the application ofsuperphosphates to organic-rich soil.
