A few schools have seen revenues of hundreds of millions of dollars for some of their patents, inspiring hopes of finding the next Gatorade. However, some university efforts to extract value from their IP may have unintended consequences that limit the potential of university-industry collaboration. It's important to understand the potential barriers and steps that can lead to more successful collaboration.
