Covering the course of a two-year period, during the establishment of the theatre program atAmerican University of Sharjah, this paper explores both the difficulties and solutions ofstaging university level theatrical productions on the Arabian Peninsula, but also the impactof the program on university life and culture. In part one, it deals with the social implicationsin Islamic culture and how problems of performance have been handled, as well as potentialbenefits of those solutions. It also explores practical staging problems in developing theatrepieces and their solutions. In part two, it explores student responses to the program. Howhave students benefitted, and how has theatrical activity improved their lives and enhancedtheir culture?
