Professional Communication classrooms and textbooks usually suffer from an insistenceon rule- or principle-based assessment, despite claims of espousing a rhetoricalapproach to communication. The assessment of student work, therefore, becomesproblematic since audience and purpose are rarely taken into account in an evaluation.This paper reports on an innovative assessment model where students have to present inan evidence-based and reflective manner the design decisions which led to thedevelopment of a communicative event. The assignment process, as well as the resultsof utilizing this approach in a discipline-specific Computer Science classroom, arepresented. The implications of this model for communication classrooms are discussed,especially as they can encourage a shift to applied rhetoric.
