摘要

In this paper we present the research project called “S.M.I.L.E. with Simpatia” developedin the context of a higher education program called Alta Scuola Politecnica, which joinstwo major Italian universities, i.e. Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino, and twocompanies, such as Telecom Italia and Pirelli Lab. The project is focused on theapplication of broadband technology into healthcare aiming at bridging the gap betweenhuman and technology. Because of the problem complexity and the peculiar context of ahealthcare residence for disabled people, all the work was based on user-centereddesign techniques and conducted with an action research approaches. The project resultis a system package based on Skype that allows disabled people to communicate withtheir relatives and their experts by the help of wide band technology. The introduction ofseveral interfaces composed by physical devices and a customizable user interface hasbeen able to stimulate recreational feelings, in order to overcome residents’ fear towardsinformation technology. Field testing on residents has revealed a great appreciation of thefinal prototype, demonstrating that they do not fear new technologies and giving us manyhints for further developments.
