摘要

“A 2005 London Business School study of 92 countries showed that an increase in 10 mobile phonesper 100 people could increase Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 0.6%. Similarly, McKinsey & Co –based on market research in China, India and the Philippines found that raising wireless penetrationby 10% can lead to an increase in GDP of about 0.5% - this equated to $12 billion for an economy thesize of China!”A healthy and informed person can make better choices for both work and life. Better choices for workand life result into - his growth, his family’s well-being, and ultimately the prosperity of the region andeconomies he is associated with. This paper highlights how innovation in mobile commerce, educationand healthcare services in the rural regions can contribute to the growth of - the individuals living inthese regions and ultimately their regional economies.Illiteracy, one of the most severe issues in the less developed parts of the world can be addressed bythe growing mobile usage and some modern services available through mobile networks. Today mostnon-literate mobile users ignore the screen when using a mobile phone. Instead of engaging with theUI on the screen, participants engage with the physical interface of the phone. They leverage theirspatial memory and gestures by memorizing patterns (i.e., pressing a button three times, remembering the patterns of numbers). And there is a big community of such kind of mobile userstoday. Expecting such users to perform some elaborate set of steps to get to a service to teach themto read or write would be expecting too much. But if accessing a lesson to learn the basic concepts ofMath in a language of their choice from an online tutor is only a phone click away, it will be more thanmagic for the illiterate population. They will be finally able to imagine getting out of the dark of literacy, and that too at the touch of a button.Health care in general across the globe is a privilege for rich and wealthy due to the lack ofexperienced medical professionals or due to corrupt governance policies. This problem is even graverwhen it comes to villages or remote areas. Taking India as an example here - a large majority ofIndia's population (nearly 72 percent) still lives in villages, where health care facilities are eitherunavailable or are below the acceptable standards. Most specialists are unwilling to practice in ruralareas. According to statistics, 80 percent of doctors in India, 75 percent of dispensaries and 60percent of hospitals, are situated in urban areas. How could technology help improve the situationhere? Today, mobile phones are equipped with sensors - which could be used as remote monitoringtools and the measurements they generate could be relayed through the phone network for remotecommunication to a medical professional unwilling to travel to a rural area. As an example, theinformation about the speed of rotation of the patient's arm or leg measured through a mobile phoneaccelerometer, and the respective heart rate measured through another tool, could be relayed to adoctor monitoring the patient remotely. Advancements in mobile technologies are making theinformation capture and relay process as simple as pressing a button on the phone tied to a patient'sarm or leg.In addition to these two, there are several innovative usages of mobile technologies today that canhelp improve commerce, education, and health care - for the greater good of mankind.
