The increasing use of aluminium aloys in transportation, as for example aeronautics, creates the need for research on the more efficient and reliable welding processes to be used, through comparative studies. The present paper is a contribution to this effort, contrasting a traditional process and an emerging one, Metal Inter Gas welding and Friction Stir Welding. A particular effort is made to relate the macroscopic mechanical behaviour to the microstructural features of the weldments.
