FT-IR spectroscopy has been used to explore the changes in the vibrational bands ofnormal and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissues in the region 4000-400 cm~(-1).Significant changes in the spectral features were observed. The spectral changes were the resultsof characteristics structural alterations at the molecular level in the malignant tissues. Thesealterations include structural changes of proteins and possible increase of its content, an increasein the nucleic-to-cytoplasm ratio, an increase in the relative amount of DNA, an increase in therate of phosphorylation process induced by carcinogenesis, a loss of hydrogen bonding of theC-OH groups in the amino acid residues of proteins, a decrease in the relative amount of lipidscompared to normal epithelial oral tissues. The results of the present study demonstrate that theFT-IR technique has the feasibility of discriminating malignant from normal tissues and otherpathological states in a short period of time and may detect malignant transformation earlier thanthe standard histological examination stage.
