Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) is one of the most dangerousbacterial pathogens of kiwifruit plants worldwide. In a trial period of four years(2003-2006) in a kiwifruit orchard in Northern Italy it was shown a remarkablePss population on the different phylloplane organs (leaves, twigs and floral buds)and a relevant percentage of them showed ice nucleation activity (INA). A higherpercentage of INA strains was recorded at the beginning of the vegetative kiwifruitseasons (59% of isolates collected in spring) whereas lower percentage of INAstrains were observed in the other seasons. Among the different copper compoundsutilised, the higher reduction of Pss population was observed after spray treatmentswith copper idroxide peptidate on twigs, copper sulphate on leaves and fruits, coppersulphate peptidate and copper oxychloride on buds. Natural extracts inhibited thein vitro growth of Pss strains.
