A Unified Bolomey's Formula for Concrete Made with Natural and Recycled Aggregate: Effect of Recycled Aggregate Replacement

Waste concrete aggregate is now being increasingly used in new concrete constructions. For concrete made with recycled aggregates(RA), compressive strength values are in the range of 0 to 40% lower than those of comparable concrete containing natural aggregates(NA), due to the inferior mechanical properties of RAs than those of NAs in general. Thus the Bolomey's formula should be modified considering the effect of coarse aggregate. In this paper, effect of the replacement ratio of the recycled coarse aggregate on the crushing value of the mixed coarse aggregate and the strength of the concrete made with various replacement ratio of recycled concrete aggregate. The results showed that the crushing value of the mixed coarse aggregate was linearly relative with the replacement ratio of the recycled coarse aggregate. And for the concrete made with various mixed coarse aggregate, the compressive strength of concrete is not only clearly linearly related to free cement water ratio, but also clearly related to crushing value of the mixed coarse aggregate. And the regression unified Bolomey's formula among compressive strength of concrete at 28 days, crushing value of the mixed coarse aggregate and the free cement water ratio were obtained.
