Comparing Assessment Instruments: Measuring Growth in Middle School Students' Knowledge of Technology

"Tech Camp" is a one week summer camp designed to attract middle school students' interests to and understanding of technology. This camp which was offered in 2009 in four sessions to 53 middle school students was five days long, six hours per day, and was attended by students drawn from schools that have a large percentage of minority students and that have a large percentage of students that qualify for free or reduced cost lunches. As part of this program, three assessment instruments were implemented in pre and post camp format. These instruments included: a multiple choice exam, student diagrams, and concept maps. This paper compares and contrasts the effectiveness of the assessment instruments for measuring changes in students' knowledge and attitudes. Based on this analysis, differences were found across the information acquired through the various measurement techniques as well as the effectiveness of these techniques for measuring changes among genders.
