Microwave Radar and Ultrasonic Level Technologies for the Water Industries

Microwave radar and ultrasonic level measurement use similar principles of operation and have many overlapping applications. Ultrasonics has a long history of service in water industries; however radar is often considered to have superior performance. Until recently the price difference between the two technologies was sufficient for most to continue using ultrasonics. Today the newest two-wire radar transmitters are competitively priced and many are making the switch to what they consider to be the latest and greatest technology, microwave radar. Both technologies can be successfully applied to most applications in the water and waste water industries, so is price the only determining factor? When and where does microwave radar perform better than ultrasonics? Are there applications where ultrasonics will have similar performance or offers the better value? Understanding the theories behind both technologies is the key to knowing which technology best fits the application.
