Over the past four years Radar Portal Systems (RPS) has developed innovative new technologies allowing more accurate assessment of road pavements. The RoadScout system encapsulates these new technologies, allowing high speed capture of the entire road environment with one system, including the surface, subsurface and surrounds; improving project planning and the ability of asset managers to maintain their road network. A patented GPR system has been developed, based on noise modulated spread spectrum radar, which allows the creation of large arrays of high-speed wideband subsurface imaging devices, without the associated size and complexity of existing technologies. The result is a 3D GPR system consisting of an array of 24 robust ground-coupled antennas, spanning the maximum vehicle width of 2.5 m. At speeds of up to 100 km/h, each radar unit is capable of penetrating to a depth of over 1.2 m with a sample spacing of 6 cm. The system produces a full 3D image of the road subsurface, without the need for traffic control. Complementing the subsurface imaging system is a high-resolution surface imaging system utilizing artificial lighting, laser roughness profiling units, high resolution panoramic camera system, and a GPS and wheel encoder positioning system. The result is an extensive array of information, collected by the one system. To support this technology, a custom software package has been developed which to allow the display and analysis of the large volumes of data produced. The software package also incorporates automation techniques, allowing identification of surface cracking and automatic tracking of GPR layer depths. Work is progressing on the integration of FWD measurements. This technology has been applied in numerous projects in Australia, from the analysis of bridge structures at high speed, to the detection of the structure of concrete and asphalt pavements. We are also now in the process of applying this technology to larger network level analysis.
