Rapid Bridge Assessment Method for Highway Bridges

There are an increasing number of highway bridges in our nation which fail to pass current simplified load rating analyses. According to the National Bridge Inventory, there are approximately 65,000 bridges posted with an additional 12,000 either recommended for posting, temporarily supported or closed altogether, though the number is likely larger. Quantitative structural assessment through the use of controlled load tests (either diagnostic or proof level) has proven effective to provide refined load rating factors, but is hampered by cost limitations, time constraints and access restrictions. As an alternative, a rapid bridge assessment method (RBAM) leveraging strains and displacements caused by operational demands has been developed in order to aid in assessing the structural integrity of bridges which fail to pass the conventional load rating analyses. The RBAM focuses on obtaining key response metrics, such as distribution and impact factors, by making use of reusable sensors where possible, quick sensor installation methods, and typical daily truck traffic. An on-site data visualization program to ensure data quality and an automated post-processing program to process large data sets and quickly extract response metrics have been developed and integrated into this method. Together these features allow for full testing and data interpretation of a bridge, within a day, without the need of excessive loads or bridge closures. This paper presents a case study demonstrating the RBAM and its validation through a traditional truck load test and finite element (FE) model analysis. It will also be shown that the RBAM is a cost- and time-effective alternative to the rather expensive and time-consuming current quantitative assessment approaches to provide refined load ratings. Last, improvements and further development to this method are briefly discussed.
