Biofilm formation by algae on sandstone monuments and their inhibition: a case study of Agra (India)

The analysis of algal biofilm on stone showed a marked softening of the substratum and the progressive deepening of the biological growth in the layers beneath the surface. The species of algal biofilm produce and secrete a variety of metabolites which directly dissolve the stone compounds or increase their solubility. The influence of algal biofilm was studied on three sandstone monuments of Agra (India). The experiment approach included study of algal diversity, SEM study of biodeteriorated sandstone, and effect of See Spray?, H_2O_2, Pursue? and Benzalkonium chloride on algal growth. Research revealed that quaternary ammonium compound -Pursue? and Benzalkonium chloride (BKC) were appropriate algicide. H_2O_2 and See Spray? couldn't destruct the algal growth.
