Thymus vulgaris (Thyme), Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile), Croton lechleri (Sangre de Drago), Calendula officinalis L. (Marigold), Julliana adstringens Schl. (Cuachalalate) are known to have antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal activity.In the present study we investigated the in vitro antimicrobial activity against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Different parts of the plants were extracted with solvents to obtain aqueous extracts. These extracts were tested in vitro for their antimicrobial activity against the periodontopathogens microorganisms using agar diffusion and microdilution methods. Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was evaluated by measuring the absence of bacterial growth against the tested organisms and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined from the lowest concentrations of extracts to inhibit the growth of microorganisms. Our results showed that extracts of the five plants tested have some degree of antimicrobial activity against the two microbial strains with MIC ranging from 37-250mg/ml.
