In this interdisciplinary research project, a profit maximizing (linear programming)whole-farm model for milk production systems was developed. Eleven milk production systems were incorporated into a representative dairy farm model involving variations in date of calving, quantity of concentrate fed, and nature of forage utilized. Milk supply pattern and quality were assumed to vary with calving date and diet. A milk marketing contract allowed for changes in average annual price, seasonal price variation, butterfat content and protein content. Under a range of likely market scenarios the optimum systems identified were moderate input-moderate output systems. This work illustrates how profit maximizing whole-farm models can be used as a decision support tool to help farmers in their business strategy decisions. Agricultural researchers, agribusiness advisers and agricultural policy makers can also be better informed as to when it is appropriate for farmers to adopt a particular milk production system.
