Based on the hydraulic model tests, the "unit velocity method" was proposed and applied to analyze the flow-dividing characteristics of intake-outlet in upper and lower reservoirs of Xiangshuijian pumped storage power station. The proposed method has the advantages of clear physical meaning and exact quantification. By applying the "unit velocity method", the spacing between the splitter walls at the entrance of diffuser was adjusted to equal spacing in order to fit the bend effect of the tailrace conduit in the intake-outlet of lower reservoir. This arrangement is an improvement compared with the conventional unequal spacing usually adopted for the splitter wall configuration design of side-type intake-outlet at home and abroad. During model tests the proposed method can be used to adjust quickly the splitter wall spacing of side-type intake-outlets to find a satisfactory configuration with small hydraulic loss and uniform distribution of flow velocity.
