摘要

Inorganic Arsenic (As) species were separated in the field using anion-exchange chromatography from water samples collected at the abandoned Red Devil mercury mine in Southwest Alaska, USA and measured in the laboratory using hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry and ICP-MS. High levels of total arsenic and antimony confirm that surface water is being contaminated from rain water seeping through the tailings and calcine piles and into Red Devil Creek. Arsenite [As (III)] is the dominant arsenic species, even though arsenate As (V)] is thermodynamically favored at the measured Eh and pH conditions This may indicate that arsenic speciation is being influenced by high levels of antimony in the tailings soils.
