24 years after Poland's transformation began, not only does the country not have a plan how to develop its power generation capacity, but fails to propose how to restore the existing resources. Coal or gas, shale gas or nuclear power, renewable energy in view of the economic crisis, EU directives, arrangements made in Kyoto and Durban, versus national competitiveness. The "strategy" seems to be no‐strategy. Relating to these issues, the paper discusses the current status of the Polish power sector. The pragmatic and down‐to‐earth understanding of environmental care, in essence publicly accepted regardless of "political correctness" promoted by politicians of various affiliations, set off a bottom‐up movement at the level of power producers groups (PGE, Tauron, ENEA, Energa) to escape the black‐out scenario for today or tomorrow. Tendering procedures have been started, first contracts awarded... And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Europe's largest investment market in conventional power generation is about to open.
