摘要

This study focuses on the socio-economic importance of the small pelagics in the fisheries communities of Northwest Africa. The review, through existing information, examines the social and economic benefits the fishery generates for the fisher folk in these communities and the countries in general. Fishing is a multipurpose operation that attracts several interactive jobs and commercial activities very much integrated in socioeconomic development of African coastal countries. The Northwest Africa subregion has important small pelagics stocks which form an essential component in the social and economic development of fisheries communities of the countries in the area. Catches from small pelagics fishery form 93 percent of total fish landings in thesubregion in 2006. Small pelagics are the major source of animal protein for the coastal communities in this area contributing about 30 percent of the per capita protein consumption in Senegal in 2003 and 25 percent in The Gambia in 2006. The products are traded and consumed in the fresh, smoked or dried forms. The fishery offers direct jobs to thousands of men and women along the production chain and its ancillary activities in the subregion. The wealth and well-being generated from the interaction andintra-action among the various actors in the fishery, through harvesting, catch landing, processing, marketing and consumption, is immense. The fishery also has the potential for cultural fusion and food security enhancement in the coastal communities.
