The expression of four genes involved in the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase [PAL], chalcone synthase [CHS], flavanone 3-hydroxylase [F3H] and dihydroflavonol 4-reductase [DFR], was spatially investigated in root, stem, leaf, unopened-floret, half-full bloom floret and full bloom floret of a Vanda hybrid-pale mauve orchid (V. teres × V. hookerian?) using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The competitive RT-PCR showed that PAL was highly expressed in all vegetative parts and all three developmental stages of the orchid florets. CHS was sharply expressed in the florets during development, compared to the vegetative organs. With similar to CHS but even more, the F3H expression was significant in floral parts including unopenedfloret, and floret at half-full bloom and full bloom stages. The expression of DFR fluctuated in the plant organs which was low in the leaves.
