Mitral stenosis is generally caused by a rheumatic heart disease, and leads to enlargement of the left atrium and weakened atrium walls. It is often manifested through the heart sound known as opening snap (OS). However, the OS sounds very similar to the third heart sound (S3). In this paper, we propose an algorithm to differentiate between these two sounds. The algorithm is based on a wavelet-based feature, and is tested on preliminary data from thirty recordings containing either OS or S3. The results of the analysis showed that that the proposed method attains 92.9% sensitivity and 93.8% specificity. The analysis also showed that the algorithm is sensitive to the choice of the wavelet function and the decomposition level. Nevertheless, these results encourage further investigations of the proposed approach and its capability to differentiate these clinically relevant cases.
