Ionic liquids are under intense investigation as a potential replacement for solvents to remove CO_2 from natural gas due to their versatility and unique properties. In this paper, the synthesis of ionic liquids containing 1-hexyl- 3-methylimidazolium cation with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide or acetate are presented. The decomposition temperatures of the ionic liquids are also reported. The solubility of CO_2 in the ionic liquids was determined using an equilibrium cell at 298.15K and in the pressures up to about 17 bar. The result shows that 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide has greater affinity towards CO_2 than that of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ionic liquid. Overall the results indicate that the ionic liquids have potential to act as solvents in CO_2 separation processes.
