Employees at a Namibian Copper Smelter are occupationally exposed to inorganic arsenic as a contaminant of the complex ore concentrate being smelted and processed. Arsenic is monitored biologically by means of total urinary arsenic (uAs). The relationship between uncorrected uAs and creatinine corrected uAs (uAsCr) was examined for 4313 end of shift, end of week measurements with a view to understanding the impact of adjustment by urinary creatinine (uCr) concentration when comparisons are made with the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Biological Exposure Index (BEI). uAs and uAsCr were positively correlated. uAsCr provides a higher numerical value than uAs at uAs values below 25 μg/L, and a lower numerical value compared with uAs values above 25 μg/L, complicating comparisons with the uncorrected uAs ACGIH standard. The use of uncorrected uAs as required by the (ACGIH) can be misleading in both high and low exposure settings.
