Rapid structural modelling from core photography at the Zafranal project, Peru

The Zafranal porphyry copper project is situated approximately 100km north of Arequipa in southern Peru. Compa?ia Minera Zafranal, owned by Teck Resources (80%) and Mitsubishi Minerals Corporation (20%), operates the project, which is currently in the advanced stages of a feasibility study. A need was identified to develop a structural model as quickly as possible to feed into geotechnical studies for pit design, with an emphasis on brittle faults and their interaction with pit walls. The previous structural model was limited to a few major faults cutting the central part of the pit. The surface map (Figure 1) shows steep E-W striking faults which limit the system to the north and south. These faults act as hard boundaries to alteration and were controls on the mineralising system. Another set of steep faults is mapped striking around 300° and locally coincides with the outcrop limits of early and late stage mineralized intrusives; this set was also active during mineralisation. A third set of more NS striking structures is post-mineral.
