In recent years, there has been considerable pressure put on swine production systems to gestate sows in some form of group housing rather than individual gestation pens. Whether the decision was driven by state legislation, market pressure or individual choice several sow production facilities have implemented some type of group sow housing. The types of group housing and feeding systems that have been implemented for gestating pregnant sows include: floor feeding in small pens, small pens with a stub stall or stanchion where feed is delivered via a trickle feed system or dropped multiple times per day, free access stalls with conventional drop feeding in a large pen or Electronic Sow Feeding (ESF) in a large pen.AP/Schauer has been marketing ESF systems in the USA since 2005. This paper will illustrate the changes that AP has experienced with the types of ESF housing in the US over the last nine years.
