摘要

The increasing availability of advanced imaging has increased the number of adrenal masses found in dogs and cats, including benign, malignant, and functional masses. In dogs, adrenocortical tumors are the most common adrenal tumors found in necropsystudies with adenomas more common than carcinomas, followed by adrenal medullary tumors (pheochromocytomas) and metastatic lesions to the adrenal glands. In cats, tumors metastatic to the adrenal glands are more common than adrenocortical tumors and pheochromocytomas.The adrenal gland is structurally divided into the cortex and the medulla, and the cortex had 3 functionally distinct layers that release different hormones under the control of separate stimulatory mechanisms. Mineralocorticoid release occurs from the zona glomerulosa under the control of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, serum potassium and ACTH. Glucocorticoids are released from both the zonae fasciculata and reticularis, primarily under the control of ACTH. The medulla acts as a modified post ganglionic sympathetic neuron and releases epinephrine (EPI) and norepinephrine (NE); canines release primarily the former and felines release about 50/50 of each.
