Take Home Message- Performing the DDF tenotomy requires de-rotational shoeing in addition to the surgical procedure. The two main goals of shoeing are achieving de-rotation of the distal phalanx and prevention of subluxation of the distal interphalangeal joint. The Deep Digital Flexor tenotomy has been described and modified on many occasions. 1,2'3There are currently two common techniques. The first is a DDF tenotomyperformed at mid cannon, the second being performed mid pastern. The two techniques can both beperformed standing or under general anesthesia. Generally the first DDF tenotomy performed on a horse is executed at the mid cannon level. Performing the first DDF tenotomy at mid cannon leaves room at the lower cannon area for a second tenotomy and leaves the mid pastern area available as well. Generally much greater release of the DDFT is achieved at the mid pastern level.
