Distributed electric aeropropulsion architectures for VTOL drones and urban air-taxi vehicles

In September 2016, the Transformative Vertical Flight Workshop sponsored by SAE, AHS, AIAA, and NASA has been one of the major events setting the scene for a new era of aviation in which new technologies would enable novel designs for air vehicles able to perform safe, environmentally friendly and affordable urban and sub-urban air trips. ONERA and SAFRAN have undertaken a study with the primary purpose of reviewing the potential configurations that can be thought up for this market using the novel distributed electric propulsion technology paired with highly efficient digital control as these technologies open new horizons in the design space of VTOL aircraft. These configurations have been classified into families and a comprehensive comparison of their main characteristics has been done. Two promising electric hybrid concepts have then been selected to be optimized through a multidisciplinary preliminary design process and their performance has been assessed at a high level.
