Mastitis is one of the most prevalent and costly diseases afflicting dairy farms worldwide (Steeneveld et al., 2011). Financial losses associated with mastitis are attributed to decreased milk production and quality, increased culling rates, discardedmilk, treatment costs, and adverse effects on fertility and early pregnancy (Hertl et al., 2014). The greatest incidence of mastitis occurs within the first weeks following parturition that overlaps with the transition period (Schukken et al., 2011), atime of negative energy balance following the onset of lactation and a change in immune bias from Th2-dominated immune responsiveness in late gestation to Thl domination in early lactation (Quesnell et al., 2012). Bovine mastitis is most commonly causedby bacterial intramammary infections (IMF). A large number of bacterial pathogens have been associated with bovine IMI (Hertl et al., 2014; Cha et al., 2016). In this presentation, 5 new developments in bovine udder health will be highlighted. These developments include the increased knowledge of the normal and abnormal intramammary microbiome of the bovine mammary gland, the increased understanding of the immune-biology of the mammary gland, particularly during late gestation and early lactation, and finally the changing perspectives on antimicrobial use during the dry period of dairy cows.
