@@Although the evidence for a direct relationship between salt intake and blood pressure is widely accepted, there is controversy on whether this effect translates into increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in populations with high dietary salt consumption. This current controversy is not necessarily a dispassionate and balanced factual discussion in the search for a consensus of informed opinion, but has an emotional content. According to Beard and Stowasser, confusing the terms "efficacy" and "effectiveness" may invalidate important conclusions drawn after analysis of randomised, controlled studies (RCTs) on the interaction between salt and health. "Efficacy" refers to the impact of an intervention that is fully applied (e.g. during a controlled clinical trial), differing from "effectiveness" which refers to the impact in real world situations.
