Oxidative stress is the product of an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants that can damage cell components, and is associated with compromised growth, disease, and the ageing process.1 However, free radicals can also serve a regulatory role in metabolism (e.g., free radicals participate in induction of hyper-activated sperm motility and acrosome reaction).1 Vitamin E is a key antioxidant, and is typically dosed well above NRC requirements3 to reduce half-life of free radicals.4 However, overdosing antioxidants may also impede regulatory processes dependent on free radicals. A more balanced antioxidant approach should be favored: rather than adding one antioxidant at a very high level, dosing a range of molecules with antioxidant properties but with different radical affinities and different distributions in the body. This allows the body to better control the antioxidant defenses without impeding the regulatory actions of tree radicals. Plant polyphenols possess the same radical-quenching basic structure as vitamin E, and may complement the antioxidant defense of the animal. Two research trials were conducted to determine the effect of vitamin E in combination with a polyphenol blend vs. a high dose of only vitamin E on oxidative stress and performance of pigs.
