The demands on industrial robots regarding speed and precision are increasing. To come up with more productive systems new innovative concepts are necessary. To reduce inertia forces extreme lightweight structural components are designed for those parts which are moved with high speed and accelerations. The disadvantage of conventional lightweight structures is the lower stiffness and therefore these mechanism tend to vibrations and to larger deviations from the planned path. The problems can be solved by using active materials in the lightweight members. In the paper a new design of an adaptive rod is shown. In order to develop control strategies, simulation tools as explained in this paper are needed.
