Worldwide concern over acid deposition is resulting in the implementation of increasingly stringent controls for acid rain precursors (NO_x and SO_2) from stationary sources. Coal-fired utility boilers are often a target of local regulations since they typically represent significant sources of these pollutants. This paper describes show computer modeling tools were used to evaluate the impacts of burner tuning and combustion modification on NO_x emissions from a large coal-fired utility boiler. The subject of this study was a 650 MW_e utility boiler which was retrofit with low-NO_x burners to comply with local limits on NO_x emissions. Post-retrofit NO_x emissions were 100 to 150 ppm higher than the levels expected to be achieveable with low-NO_x burners on this particular unit.
