Since most vehicle forces are transmitted through the tyre at the tyre-terrain interface, knowledge of the forces produced at this interface is of great benefit for vehicle dynamics and control. As the contact patch is hidden between the tyre and the road, several studies have focused on measuring tyre strain on the inside surface of the tyre to determine tyre forces. Many of these studies have been performed on passenger tyres with very homogeneous treads. This study focused on an agricultural tyre with large lugs which results in large strain changes across the contact patch. This study aims at measuring the forces transferred to an agricultural tyre and the resulting strain on the inside of the tyre in contact with the test surface on a variable speed rolling drum with varying inflation pressures, loads and slip angles. The tyre is instrumented with a system termed the Tyre Terrain Camera (T2Cam) which consists of a calibrated stereo camera rig that can measure full-field inner tyre surface deformation and strains of a static or rolling tyre. This study focused on initial test result on a rolling drum.
