The fuel is one of the most important elements that keeps the motorized vehicles moving.Determining when to refuel is a crucial task, because when this is done with inaccurate information,it could lead to big catastrophic consequences. Not knowing the actual fuel level could result to endup with the fuel tank empty far from fuel station, or in the other side, could lead to under using thecapacity of the whole tank. Under using the total capacity of the tank produces some reduction ofproductivity by having to go to refill more times, but recovering an equipment without fuel in thefield, implies to deploy other equipment to handle this unexpected situation, even sometimesproducing queues in the working area causing bigger problems, affecting considerably theproductivity.The Komatsu 930E is equipped with sensors to measure the fuel level at any time. Sensors have acertain resolution and a proper process noise. Beside this, external conditions as the roadirregularities produce a sloshing phenomenon in the tank making the level estimation even aharder task to perform. Sensors and tanks are not identical along the fleet, so specific models arefitted to each truck.In this work, multiple models are generated and fitted by empirical refill data. The fuel level signalis processed by several layers of filters in order to reduce the external noise and moderate theuncertainty about the estimation of the fuel level in each measurement.After the implementation of this work, the mean usage of the tank capacity along the fleet raisedfrom 71.2 % (3775 [L]) to 80 % (4240 [L]), reducing the amount of refills and keeping the uncertaintyof the models lower than 15 % of the tank capacity, assuring the non-occurrence of the empty fueltank case on the field.
