Alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is a neuropeptide which is derived from the precursor molecule pro-opiomelanocortin. As its crucial roles of defervescence, anti-inflammation and immunomodulation, α-MSH is becoming a hotspot in neuroendocrine-immune modulation field. It has been shown that α-MSH could restrain many kinds of acute and chronic inflammation by controlling the release of inflammatory mediators and their following effects, yet there isn't a report about the cumulative toxicity of α-MSH. Dendritic cell (DC) is a distinct kind of professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs), and only DC has the capacity to activate naive T cells. Different DC subsets, even DCs in different development status, have different functions. Studies have shown that DCs express melanocortin receptor-1 (MC-1R) for α-MSH, and the expression of CD86 and CD40 on DCs could be down-regulated by α-MSH. In this research, the effects of α-MSH on the development, maturation and function of DCs were studied.
