Extensive research is currently being conducted in the field of non-platinum group metal oxygen reduction catalysts for low-temperature fuel cells. Many of the synthesis methods used to produce these novel materials involve grinding the precursors in a planetary ball mill. Consequently, more information is needed to understand how this procedure affects the physical properties of the resulting carbon-based materials. Additionally, it is crucially important to investigate the influence of the physical properties on the electrochemical performance of the electrocatalysts.
