The Influence of Negative Gossip on Organizational Citizenship Behavior: The Moderating Effect of Moral Courage

Research on negative workplace gossip has focused on the impact on victims, ignoring how employees respond to their own negative workplace gossip. Based on the theory of moral compensation, we hypothesizes that employees who engage in negative workplace gossip may engage in organizational citizenship behavior as a result of guilty. The results of an experience sampling study have shown that negative workplace gossip can lead to feelings of guilt in employees' daily work, which can lead to organizational citizenship behavior. In addition, the moral courage of employees strengthen these effects by increasing employees' awareness of their unethical behavior and their willingness and determination to compensate for it. Our research helps theoretically understand how employees react to negative workplace gossip and provides insight into how and when disruptive employee behavior can lead to more constructive behavior.
