Human amniotic membrane (AM) is the innermost layer of the fetal membrane that has many effective and beneficial factors. These factors can promotes corneal epithelial healing, reduces scarring, suppresses inflammation, and inhibits angiogenesis. Therefore AM transplantation is used in ocular surface defects. But AM transplantation has some limitations. Thus extraction and purification of these beneficial factors and preparation of mucoadhesive nanoparticles (like chitosan) from them can be very useful in ocular delivery, corneal tissue engineering and increasing the biocompatibility of artificial corneas.
