Wind is an environment friendly renewable energy source for power generation. Wind turbines are the machines used to convert wind energy into mechanical power. These are mainly of two types, namely Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) & Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). The VAWT is expected to be a viable proposition for rural electrification, pumping, aeration & many household applications in developing countries including India. The VAWT has many advantages over HAWT, like simple in construction, self-starting, inexpensive, acceptance of wind from any direction without orientation etc. However, in spite of these advantages, VAWT is not gaining popularity largely because of its low efficiency. Thus, the challenge lies in designing rotors with higher efficiency. Hence, there is a need for research work in this area.
