摘要

The natural corrosion product of some ancient coins recovered from the river Tiber were studied by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy. In fact most structures, and polymorphs, produce unique Raman spectra that can differentiate between minerals.Five Cu base alloys coins were analysed whose patinas have a very different appearance to each other.The analyses provided good results in the study of the corrosion patina and highlighted that coins buried in slightly different conditions can show different corrosion phenomena.The advantage of Raman microscopy technique is the non-destructiveness and the reproducibility of the measurements on micrometric particles that can be achieved in the laboratory without the need of any sample preparation.
