Vibration is an ongoing and increasingly common concern in the structural engineering community. The culpritsrninclude wind, earthquakes, pedestrians, mechanical systems, advanced materials, efficient engineering tools, novelrnand unique architectural design. Many design states can be affected by vibration, including safety, fatigue, rndeflection and comfort.rnTraditional engineering approaches to reduce vibration often remain cost effective. However, when designers havernexhausted these possibilities, an alternative solution which takes advantage of newer technology or ideas can bernimplemented, without significant cost penalties. A primary source of this technology is the field of mechanical andrnautomobile engineering where much has been developed to solve vibration problems. Many of these approaches arernnow making their way into the realm of structural engineering.
