In 1993, in response to requests by a number of federal agencies - including the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S.Army Corps of Engineers, Maritime Administration, U.S.Navy, U.S.Geological Survey, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - the Marine Board of the National Research Council (NRC) assembled a committee to evaluate the state of practice in the management and remediatio of contaminated marine sediments in the United States and provide recommendations for future action.
