A xylanase produced by Penicillium sp. ZCF57 and its two pure enzymes Ⅺ and Ⅻ were characterized in this paper, and its potential application in wheat straw chemical pulp biobleaching was evaluated. The optimum pH and temperature of crude xylanase from ZCF57 was 7.0 and 55 ℃, respectively. It was stable in the range of pH 5.0~10.0 and below 45 ℃. Some of transition metal ions, such as Fe~(2+), Mn~(2+) and Mg~(2+) could increase xylanase activity of ZCF57 dramatically. As far as the enzyme activity was concerned, the optimum temperature and pH value was 55 ℃ and 7.0 for the enzyme Ⅺ, and 50℃ and 6.0 for the enzyme Ⅻ, respectively. It was stable in the condition of below 45℃ and pH 6.0~9.0 for enzyme Ⅺ, but of below 50℃ and pH 5.0~8.0 for enzyme Ⅻ. Biobleaching effectiveness of the crude enzyme, the pure enzyme Ⅺ and Ⅻ were also researched by using enzymes for pretreating wheat straw chemical pulp. The brightness and strength properties of pulp, and the reducing sugars, the lignin-derived compounds and chromophoric materials released in filtrates by the enzymes were analyzed. The results indicated that the xylanase has a good potential application in biobleaching of pulp.
