This paper demonstrates the positive results ofrnconducting a risk-based total system review of an IntegratedrnActive Heave Hoisting System used on Deepwater DrillingrnVessels. This was accomplished by carrying out a ‘failurernmode and effect analysis’ (FMEA’s) study on the major subsystemsrnof the Hoisting System with focus on the interactionrnof all the components and their integration into one system.rnThe analysis was carried out with significant involvementrnfrom the rig owner, the designers/manufacturers, and anrnindependent third party each providing extensive input to thernstudy, thus providing a broader spectrum of opinions andrnknowledge of the entire system.rnThe results of this study are multifold: a significantrnreduction of the risk of major accidents due to componentrnfailures within the system, an increased reliability andrnavailability of the system, improved rig owner understandingrnof the system (and thus informed decisions on equipmentrnusage and on the establishment of operating limits of thernsystem and the rig), and an overall increase of confidence inrnthe system provided.
